Mourning the Loss of Friend and Community Member Dejanay Stanton

Yesterday evening, local outlets reported tragic news: friend and community member Dejanay Stanton was killed on Chicago’s south side. She was discovered near 40th Street and King Drive at 12:30 p.m., after persons nearby said that they had heard gunshots.

As the LGBTQ community continues to grapple with the epidemic of violence against transgender women, particularly black trans women, we mourn the loss of a spirited woman and trans sibling, Dejanay Stanton.

Our sincerest condolences go to Dejanay’s family, friends and all in our community who are impacted by hate crimes, violence and other acts of stigma and discrimination motivated by transphobia. Howard Brown will continue forging space for the experiences of trans women of color and resisting violence against them.
