Human Subjects Protection

About Institutional Review Boards

All ERA studies are approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB). The IRB is an ethical review board that ensures that the rights and well-being of people who participate in research are protected.

Howard Brown has filed a Federalwide Assurance (FWA) with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), in which we promise to uphold federal regulations and ethical principles for human subjects research supported by DHHS.

Howard Brown Health’s FWA number is 00000175.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) require IRBs to register through a system maintained by DHHS.

Howard Brown Health’s IRB Organization (IORG) number is IORG0000621.

If you have any questions about our human subjects protection program, please contact the IRB Administrator, Department of Research at irb@howardbrown.org or 773.388.8669
