JOB TITLE: RESEARCH ASSISTANT

FLSA STATUS: FULL-TIME/NON-EXEMPT

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Research Assistant will performs research activities including conducting study visits, data collection, quality assurance, data management activities, providing some client-centered HIV and STI testing and education, test counseling and risk-reduction services to individuals with walk-in clients at Howard Brown Health (HBH) facilities.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Enroll eligible volunteers into research studies and ensure volunteers are appropriately consented to participate.

Conduct individual participant visits which include collecting data from patient medical records and administering surveys.

Provide HIV and STI counseling and testing, including results delivery for point-of-care (“rapid”) and laboratory-based tests, and appropriate referral services.

Provide direct health education and information, including the knowledge of HBH’s programs and services, provision and explanation of results, and appropriate linkage to PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis), PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) and primary care services.

Perform and develop effective HIV/STI prevention interventions.

Document visits and interactions appropriately and consistently, primarily within HBH’s Electronic Health Records System (EHRS).

Ensure compliance of protocol guidelines, study specific SOPs, FDA, OHRP, CDC and applicable regulations and adhere to highest level of research participant confidentiality.

 

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL REQUIRED:

Required:

Bachelor’s Degree and/or equivalent experience with social service/public health field is required.

Experience working in HIV/STI prevention, sexual/reproductive health or other community health programs is required.

Certified in pre- and post- Counseling and Testing through Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) or Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is required.

Must possess strong communication and written skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse staff and populations.

Must possess and demonstrate experience with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel, as well as working with Electronic Health Records Systems.

Available to work evenings and weekends.

Preferred:

Experience working with LGBTQI communities highly regarded. A working knowledge of HIV/STI in diverse communities is highly desired.

Phlebotomy experience highly regarded; willingness to learn/perform phlebotomy required.

Bilingual – Spanish/English highly regarded.

  • Requires ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • May require occasional bending and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Will require periodic travel between medical sites.
