Hepatitis C is Curable!
May is Hepatitis Awareness Month, and we have good news! If you’re living with the hepatitis C virus (HCV), also known as “hep C,” you can access simple, affordable treatment at Howard Brown Health. Let’s talk about what hepatitis is, what you can do to prevent it, and how to start treatment.
What is hepatitis?
Viral hepatitis, a group of infectious diseases known as hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E — affects millions of people worldwide, causing both acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) liver disease. Currently, an estimated 2.4 million people are living with hepatitis C in the United States. Although many people living with hepatitis C are “Baby Boomers,” anyone can have it, and many do not even know they might have it. Hepatitis C can cause liver damage, liver cancer, and even death. However, it is treatable and curable. Today, hepatitis C treatments have a 95% success rate without the harsh side effects of previous medicines.
Is hepatitis C preventable?
There are steps you can take to prevent hepatitis C. Read this helpful FAQ from the CDC to learn more. HCV is only transmitted through the blood. The best way to prevent the spread of hepatitis C and other viruses is to not share needles, choose tattoo/piercing artists carefully, and practice safer sex.
