Howard Brown Health offers a wide variety of intern and extern positions designed to provide hands-on experience and to support the temporary educational experience of students and professionals seeking to work with LGBTQ patients/clients at Howard Brown, in a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model, within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).  Some of our opportunities have included Health Education, Human Resources, Behavioral Health, Medical Assisting and more. Duration varies according to program deliverables and preference is given to students currently enrolled in a degree program. All intern and extern opportunities require applicants to be at least 18 years old. Internships are on a volunteer basis with some offering credit for academic programs.

Behavioral Health Training

Training opportunities are available to students in good standing in the following graduate programs: Masters in Social Work, Masters in Counseling, and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology students (PsyD and PhD). We are not able to accept trainees outside of this timeframe due to the structure we create with our cohort and availability of supervisors.

Dietetic Internship

We are now accepting applications for a dietetic intern to work with our diabetes care team, starting after January 2026. The intern will be supervised by a registered dietitian, CDCES, who provides diabetes education and medical nutrition therapy in-clinic and via telehealth. The dietetic intern will have the opportunity to learn about interdisciplinary management of high-risk, medically complex patients, with an emphasis on addressing social determinants of health, within a diverse patient population.

This internship requires travel to clinics in these neighborhoods: Lakeview, Rogers Park, Englewood, and Humboldt Park.  Meets community nutrition and/or outpatient diabetes competencies.

Interested dietician students should apply via the general internship application and indicate they are interested in the Dietetic Internship.

General Internships

All persons interested in applying for an internship, externship, fellowship, clinical rotation, or other learning experience with any other department must complete the following application.

Upon receipt of the completed application, the Internship/Residency team will initiate the application review process. Processing the application may take up to 6 months – please be sure to apply by the deadline listed in the application. Applications must include a cover letter and resume/CV in order to be considered.

The applicant will be evaluated by Howard Brown Health teams to find a suitable position, if available. Once a position has been confirmed for the applicant and an affiliation agreement is negotiated with the sponsoring institution, the applicant will be required to complete all onboarding steps outlined below. Applicants should notify the internship team if they are requesting an internship independent of school credit or requirements.

About the Residency

The one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Residency program at HBH will provide training in all aspects of general dentistry. This residency is the perfect transitional experience to attain the confidence, competency, and clinical speed for professional success, while dedicating your skills and talents to bettering the community. Along with the clinical experience, the training includes asynchronous educational material, exposure to professional literature review, and guest presentations from experienced clinicians. The educational program covers many topics including, but not limited to:
  • Medical emergencies
  • Implant management
  • Oral mucosal diseases
  • Temporomandibular disorder management
  • Orofacial pain management
  • LGBTQ+ / HIV curriculum
  • Operative dentistry
  • Prosthodontic therapy
  • Periodontal therapy
  • Endodontic therapy
  • Oral surgery
  • Evaluation and treatment of dental emergencies
  • Pain and anxiety control utilizing behavioral and/or pharmacological techniques
  • Practice management
  • Management of patients with special needs
  • Cone beam applications
The resident practices with an assistant, as any of the staff dentists, starting with longer appointment times to become accustomed to clinic operations. Residents have the advantage of experienced faculty attendings for guidance to discuss treatment planning and case management. Many of the faculty are associated with the University of Illinois College of Dentistry and other hospitals and health care institutions. Specialists are also available for consultation.

Details and Logistics

Residents will be practicing in an integrated health center, gaining experience working in an interdisciplinary environment and will become comfortable speaking and referring to other clinical specialties. Toward the end of the program, the resident will complete a large cosmetic case under the guidance of Smile Design Consultants. Residents will participate in the program at our new dental clinic on the North Side of Chicago, offering access to the most up-to-date diagnostic and treatment instrumentation. The clinic is easily accessible by Chicago’s convenient public transportation system. The residency is a full year, the start date is open/flexible and will end exactly one calendar year from the agreed-upon start date. Clinic hours are 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday with no “on call” responsibilities.
