Violence Doesn’t Always Come with Bruises

Recognize intimate partner violence.  Words and actions can be just as harmful. Violence can happen emotionally, financially, physically and sexually.  If you are currently experiencing any type of violence, or have experienced violence in the past, we are here to help.

Not talking about it does not make it go away.

Howard Brown’s Violence Recovery Project (VRP) offers individual and group counseling, plus comprehensive services to survivors and victims of domestic or intimate partner violence.

In our safe, affirming setting, participants can be open about their sexual orientation, gender identity, and sexuality and begin to heal from emotional financial, sexual and physical abuse.

Our providers are trained in LGBTQ+ culturally competent treatment of all types of trauma. In addition, several clinicians are trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a highly effective treatment  for distress related to traumatic events.

Services are confidential. Some clients may be eligible for sliding scale services.

Domestic or Intimate Partner Violence

LGBTQ+ domestic violence occurs when one person uses a pattern of abusive behavior to get and maintain power and control over their partner. This abusive behavior can be emotional, verbal, sexual and/or physical – and it usually increases in frequency and severity over time. It is estimated that partner abuse occurs in one out of three LGBTQ+ relationships, the same rate as in heterosexual relationships.

Howard Brown provides refuge for survivors of domestic violence. These services address the unique issues LGBTQ+ survivors face. Our program also provides prevention services and community education.

If your situation is an emergency, please call the City of Chicago’s Domestic Violence Help Line at 877.863.6338 (voice) or 877.863.6339 (TTY), which may be called 24 hours a day/365 days a year.

Are you in a relationship that feels unfair?

Are you in a relationship that feels unfair?  Does your partner put you down? physically hurt you? pressure you into sex? threaten to “out” you? control you financially?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may want to consider our support group.

Howard Brown now offers a gender-inclusive group for all members of the LGBTQ+ community who have experienced unfairness in their relationships.

The group will address issues related to planning for emotional, physical and financial safety and ways to develop and maintain healthy relationships.
