It Takes a Village: Bringing an Educational Health Village to Market Days

Every year Chicago’s Market Days gathers thousands of folks from across the city for a weekend of live performances, tasty treats, and music. This year was no exception. The festival, which was founded in 1980, drew over 200,000 people in its two-day span.

Howard Brown hosted it’s very own health village, where attendees could get screened for HIV and learn more about their healthcare options and the services we provide.

Our outreach team was able to administer 250 rapid HIV tests to those who stopped by.

Through community outreach and the services that we offer at our clinic locations, we reach a broad and diverse community throughout Chicagoland. We offer free and confidential HIV/STD screening at locations throughout the city seven days a week.

We also offer Testing Together, an HIV screening and counseling service that allows partners to receive their rapid results together.  Testing Together aims to provide a basis for ongoing health conversations between you and your partner about HIV in your relationship. This allows you to talk openly and safely about a protection plan together. To learn more about Testing Together, you can click here.

At the health village we also shared information about PrEP, a once-daily medication that can reduce your risk of getting HIV.  PrEP is covered by Medicaid and most private insurance providers. If you need assistance managing PrEP, we currently offer managed PrEP primary care through our PrEP Case Management Program. Contact us today to set up an appointment with a Howard Brown provider to learn more about PrEP and your options.

The health village also hosted a variety of fun activities and games, including a dunk tank, Brooklyn Bolder’s rock climbing wall, and a condom and lube shop! There was even a photo booth where folks could channel their inner top model. Check out the full gallery here.

Thanks to all the staff, volunteers and sponsors who helped make this year’s health village a success. We couldn’t have done it without you!
