Internships and Externships

Howard Brown Health offers a wide variety of intern and extern positions designed to provide hands-on experience and to support the temporary educational experience of students and professionals seeking to work with LGBTQ patients/clients at Howard Brown Health (HBH), in a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model, within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).   We offer this service pursuant to our mission: Howard Brown Health exists to eliminate the disparities in healthcare experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people through research, education and the provision of services that promote health and wellness.  Some of our opportunities have included Health Education, Human Resources, Behavioral Health, Medical Assisting and more. Duration varies according to program deliverables and preference is given to students currently enrolled in a degree program. All intern extern opportunities require applicants to be at least 18 years old. Internships are on a volunteer basis with some offering credit for academic programs.

General Intern/Extern Application

All persons interested in applying for an intern extern position must complete the following application and submit to internshipresidency@howardbrown.org

Upon receipt of the completed application, the Internship/Residency team will initiate the application review process.  Processing the intern/extern application may take up to 6 months, preference is given to early application.  Application confirmation will occur within 48 hours and the candidate will be evaluated by Howard Brown Health teams to find a suitable position if available.  Once a position has been confirmed for the candidate by our executive leadership team and an affiliation agreement is negotiated with the sponsoring institution, they will be required to complete all onboarding steps outlined below.

Howard Brown Health onboarding consists of:

  • Certificate of Insurance (COI) from affiliated school
  • Employee Health Report/proof of immunizations
  • Certificates of Completion for:
    • HIPAA training
    • Blood borne pathogens training
    • For students working with youth – Mandatory Reporting Training must be completed
  • CANTS background check (must be submitted 45 days prior to placement)
  • Criminal background check (will be emailed link 15 days prior to placement)
  • Howard Brown Health Orientation

Internship/Externship by Department

Sexual & Reproductive Health

Howard Brown Health’s Sexual and Reproductive Health department welcomes students from public health and social services degree cohorts to complete internships in the Outreach, PrEP, Walk-in, and Partner Services programs. The purpose of this procedure is to provide guidance for the intern’s supervisors to establish a structure of supervision, feedback, and evaluation.

Social Services, Aging Services

Howard Brown Health’s Social Services and Aging Services department offer a training program for master’s level interns that will maximize networking opportunities while supporting client and agency needs throughout the academic year, typically social work and public health students.

All persons interested in an internship in Social Services or Aging Services must complete the following application and submit to internshipresidency@howardbrown.org

Education, Research and Advocacy (ERA) and General Counsel Internships 

Howard Brown Health’s Education, Research and Advocacy and General Counsel departments offer unique opportunities to work in these vital areas.  These teams welcome students pursuing interests in curriculum development, academic writing and publication, clinical and behavioral research, public policy and advocacy discourse and legal issues.

Clinical and Primary Care Residencies

Currently Howard Brown Health supports residents in Dental Medicine and Medical Assistants Extern training. All persons interested in applying for one of these positions must complete the following application and submit to internshipresidency@howardbrown.org

 

All other Primary Care clinical residencies are currently on hold.

Behavioral Health Opportunities

Training opportunities are available to students in good standing in the following graduate programs: Masters in Social Work, Masters in Counseling, and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology students (PsyD and PhD).
