Youth Medical Assistant Health Educator

JOB TITLE: YOUTH MEDICAL ASSISTANT HEALTH EDUCATOR

FLSA STATUS: FULL-TIME; NON-EXEMPT

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Youth Medical Assistant Health Educator will provide client-centered HIV/STI testing, individual and group based sexual/reproductive health education, test counseling, and risk-reduction outreach services to LGBTQ and other at-risk youth, ages 12 to 24. Additionally, this role will provide medical triage and support to primary care providers at Howard Brown Health (HBH) Broadway Youth Center (BYC) location.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Health Education Duties

  1. Provide eligible clients with confidential, client-centered pre- and post-test counseling sessions, administering STI/HIV testing with appropriate devices, reading and delivering test results, linking HIV-positive youth to care; provide HIV/STI test results to clients in a sensitive, caring, and confidential manner.
  2. Facilitate and/or provide “finger-stick” rapid HIV testing and venous blood draws (i.e. phlebotomy) for other tests; follow OSHA and blood-borne pathogen guidelines.
  3. Notify clients of positive STI/HIV results, encouraging return visits for follow-up, and ensuring timely and adequate treatment of youth participants with bacterial STIs.
  4. Scan, link and route IDPH HIV/STI results and registration documents of BYC clients quickly and accurately within Electronic Health Records System.
  5. Maintain accurate, factual, up-to-date HIV/STI knowledge and accessible, non-judgmental communication skills regarding primary care services, Hepatitis, HIV PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis), HIV PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), contraceptive options, and other relevant health topics with an emphasis on harm-reduction; the Health Educator will attend local and national trainings and/or updates, in-house skill-shares and in-services at BYC/HBHC.Programming and Outreach Duties:
  6. Ensure that patients complete all required registration, consent, and HIPAA documents for health and programming services during outreach events.
  7. Complete and enter all necessary documentation of services rendered appropriately into electronic health record system, paper logs and forms in accordance with agency and community partner policy.
  8. Provide one-on-one and group-level health education to youth participating in the Broadway Youth Center’s programming, including TYRA, FAB and Pop-Up Sex Ed workshops.
  9. Assist in the development of, and participate in, outreach events at various venues, partner agencies/institutions, or events throughout the City of Chicago.

 

Medical Assistant Duties

  1. Performs routine clinical functions including but not be limited to: vital signs, weight, blood pressure, urine sugar/protein dips, and hematest.
  2. Follow role assignments that are in alignment with the Patient Centered Medical Home Standards, and participate in all Patient Centered Medical Home efforts.
  3. Report patient observations to the responsible provider or staff nurse.
  4. Perform assigned lab procedures. Collect, label, and process all required specimens including urine, stool, sputum, and blood.
  5. Ensure that specimens are processed in accordance with established Howard Brown research protocol.
  6. Participate in quality assurance process via data collection, evaluation of results, and implementation of recommendations.
  1. Attend all required trainings and meetings.
  1. Carry out policies and procedures developed to maintain infection control and safety.
  1. Review and update referral and resource material; maintain accurate and up-to-date knowledge of full spectrum of services available at BYC and at HBHC’s other care locations and how best to facilitate referral to other services and programs.

  1. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL REQUIRED:

(Minimum education and experience needed to perform the job adequately)

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Bilingual Spanish/English Speaker
  • Professional experience with diverse populations, particularly LGBTQ, men of color, and youth

Preferred:

  • 1 year of experience working in HIV/STI prevention or sexual/reproductive health or as Medical Assistant highly regarded.   

 

  • Displays initiative in the work setting
  • Must demonstrate exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Professional experience working with at-risk youth, especially LGBTQ and homeless youth highly regarded.
  • Phlebotomy experience required.

 

ADA SPECIFICATIONS

  • Requires ability to speak audibly and listen actively.
  • Requires ability to use computers, telephones and other office equipment.
  • Requires ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • May require occasional bending and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • May require periodic travel.
