Latonya Maley, former Youth HIV/STI Prevention Manager, Named Director of Broadway Youth Center

(March 30, 2016, Chicago, IL) – Today, Howard Brown Health, announced 4009 N. Broadway as the future location for Broadway Youth Center (BYC), the youth-focused wellness and drop-in center. Howard Brown also named Latonya Maley as the new Director for BYC. BYC’s transition to the new location is expected to be completed by the end of 2016, Latonya’s first day as Director for Broadway Youth Center will be April 15.

“We’re so excited to make this long awaited announcement for BYC’s new, dedicated space,” said David Ernesto Munar, President & CEO of Howard Brown Health. “The new home for BYC is better suited to fit the needs of the diverse clients that come through 0ur doors. It’s a larger space and will allow for an expansion of hours, concurrent programming, new service lines, and an increase in the number of young LGBTQ people and allies we can serve.”

The new location will be customized for BYC. The space will allow BYC to broaden the vital services it provides to young people experiencing homelessness, including providing drop-in space, storage lockers, insurance navigation, a computer lab, in-house laundry services, showers, classrooms and expanded health promotion services.

“We’re thrilled to have Latonya take the helm at Broadway Youth Center. She brings a wealth of direct service experience, a successful history at Howard Brown, and insightful perspectives that are crucial to working with vulnerable young LGBTQ people. BYC has been looking for a permanent home for some time, and I’m confident Latonya will make the transition to the new, permanent space as seamless as possible,” said Kristin Keglovitz Baker, PA-C, Chief Operating Officer.

Latonya has worked in HIV prevention and youth services for more than a decade, most recently as Manager of Youth HIV/STI prevention at BYC.  In her three years at BYC, Latonya’s accomplishments include increasing the number of clients tested for HIV and STIs, improving patient flow and outreach, building partnerships with organizations at the community and municipal level, building an extensive relationship with Chicago Public Schools, and training and supervising a team of health educators. Her work to meet the needs of underserved and at-risk populations through the synergistic integration of health and social services has focused on sexual and reproductive health, social justice, and gender equality.  Latonya received her bachelor’s degree in anthropology/sociology from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA and a master of public health degree with a focus in community health sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

“I’m so proud to continue working with the resilient and inspiring young people who come to BYC for services,” said Latonya Maley. “I am eternally thankful to Pastor Alli Baker, Randall Doubet-King and everyone at Wellington Avenue United Church of Christ, who supported BYC’s temporary use of their space from day one. BYC was able to provide critical services for young people in Chicago with their generosity and help. I look forward to working with BYC staff and our community partners to ensure a smooth transition to the new location and to continue to refine our approach to working with any and all young people in Chicago who need BYC’s support.”
