Support Groups

HOWARD BROWN HEALTH CENTER’S
HIV/AIDS GROUP WELLNESS PROGRAM
 
HIV/AIDS Support Groups 
Living with HIV/AIDS raises complicated issues for everyone, and group sessions offer an opportunity to share information and experiences with others in similar circumstances. Groups are offered to address the educational and support needs of individuals who are newly diagnosed with HIV/AIDS or those who have been living with HIV/AIDS for several years. We also offer specific groups for HIV positive youth (ages 24 and under). Please contact the person listed for each group.


 
ADULTS (18 and over)
 
Positive Changes is a non-judgmental space for individuals living with HIV/AIDS who want to live their healthiest life. We will focus on examining lifestyle choices through such topics as antiretroviral therapy adherence, diet/exercise, emotional wellness and sustainability. Positive Changes meets once a month on every third Wednesday at 6:00PM and is facilitated by a licensed therapist. For more information please call 773-388-8934.

Tuesday Night Live is a safe space for individuals living with HIV/AIDS to talk about shared experiences and their own unique challenges. Topics may include dating and relationships, family support and health concerns. Tuesday Night Live meets every week on Tuesdays at 6:30PM and is peer led with facilitation by trained counselors. Step One invites individuals (18 and over) who are newly diagnosed with HIV within the last year to come together and share their experiences. Individuals will have the opportunity to talk about personal challenges, learn more about HIV/AIDS and explore ways in which being HIV+ can be integrated with their identity. Step One meets weekly on Tuesdays at 6:00PM and is facilitated by HBHC staff. For more information please call 773-388-8862.
 
Come Together . . . En Espanol is a group for Spanish-speaking individuals (18 and over) living with HIV/AIDS who want to talk and learn about HIV/AIDS. Individuals will have the opportunity to talk about personal challenges and learn more about HIV/AIDS. This group meets weekly on Thursdays at 6:00PM for 10-12 sessions and is peer facilitated. Come Together . . . En Espanol is conducted entirely in Spanish. For more information please call 773-572-6989.
 
Live Long and Prosper is an ongoing group for people who have been living with HIV for a while, and for those who feel they could benefit from being in a group with people who have been living with HIV for a while. Live Long and Prosper meets weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7:00PM – 8:30PM. For more information please call 773-388-8862.
 

 
YOUTH (16 through 24)
 
Positive is a non-judgmental space for HIV+ young people (under 25) to gain support and build a sense of community. Individuals will have the opportunity to share experiences, check in around their HIV care and explore topics such as sex, relationships, disclosure, medical care and more. Positive meets twice per month on the 1st and 3rd Thursday from 6:00PM-8:00PM and is facilitated by a case manager within the PATH program. For more information please call 773-388-8666.
 
Advocacy and Empowerment provides a space for HIV+ young people (under 25) to become involved in HIV/AIDS advocacy and policy as a way to foster empowerment and civic responsibility as well as expand their leadership and organizing skills. Advocacy and Empowerment meets as a large group and in individual sessions focused on developing a personal narrative through a media-based project. The group component is held twice per month on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday from 6:00PM-8:00PM. For more information please call 773-388-8666.
 
Social is Not a support group. It is a space for HIV+ young people (under 25) to meet other HIV+ young people in a social setting either at HBHC or another location. Activities are designed to facilitate relationship building among the youth and/or provide an opportunity for unstructured fun. Social meets once per month usually in the first or second week and may last for up to three hours. For more information please call 773-388-8666.
