Chief Medical Officer

Position Summary*:
This is the senior medical position at Howard Brown Health Center. Together with leadership team and in alignment with organization vision, mission and values (VMV), the CMO plans the strategy and sets goals for all medical services at HBHC and its affiliate clinics.   The CMO collaborates closely with the Clinical Director and the Clinical Operations Manager to run medical services in the most high-quality, efficient manner possible while maintaining compliance at all levels.  The CMO is also responsible for providing primary medical care to HBHC patients.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities*:

  • Acts a clinical and thought leader within the department and the agency.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of relevant clinical trends such as HIV/AIDS care, STI testing and treatment and transgender health.
  • Writes, implements and updates clinical protocols for the Medical Services Department and acts as a mentor and educator to clinical staff.
  • Recruits primary care providers as needed.
  • Is an ambassador for Howard Brown Health Center and our mission and is dedicated to the success of our organization.
  • Confers regularly with the President and CEO regarding all aspects of Howard Brown’s health care activities.
  • As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, participates in the financial planning of clinical services and in the management of all internal systems impinging upon clinical functioning.
  • Recommends clinical objectives and service activities for Howard Brown and takes major responsibility for coordinating their development.
  • Prepares reports and recommendations for Howard Brown’s Board of Directors regarding health care plans, productivity, community health care needs and the overall health care plan of Howard Brown as it relates to organization’s VMV.
  • Supervises, monitors, and evaluates the clinical performance of all Howard Brown physicians. Supervises Physician Assistants, Advance Practice Nurses, and Clinical Research Manager.
  • Facilitates physician participation in interdisciplinary teams for health care services (including support of appropriate clinical protocols, non-physician activities, collaboration with nurse practitioners, and relationships within the team).
  • Develops and coordinates Howard Brown’s medical affiliations with other clinics, hospitals, and individual physicians (and determines with which primary and tertiary care hospitals Howard Brown physicians will be required to affiliate).

Other Duties:

  • Assists in the preparation of reports to the Bureau of Primary Health Care.
  • Participates, when appropriate, in the resolution of patient complaints and other problems resulting from the delivery of specific medical services.
  • Carries out disciplinary procedures for all direct reports when appropriate and in compliance with Howard Brown personnel policies and procedures.
  • Reviews Howard Brown’s answering service, the scheduling of clinical coverage, and participates as needed in the management of other internal systems necessary for excellent clinical services and efficient work flows.
  • Attends Howard Brown Board of Directors Meetings, as required.
  • Performs clinical duties as described in the staff physician job description.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Board certification or eligible, community or public health oriented, experienced in patient care management and administration; currently holding, or eligible for, admitting privileges at community and/or tertiary hospitals. Must be a licensed medical provider with MD or DO degree, MPH, MBA, MS, MSPH desirable.  3-5 years outpatient clinical experience required. Leadership, management, program planning and CQI experience also required. Must demonstrate impeccable written and verbal communication skills.  Must be able to set vision and clear goals for medical services at HBHC and be involved in LGBT community health outside the agency as well. Serve as a role model and project a positive image of HBHC.  Knowledge and experience with multi-ethnic, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered clients and issues required.
